Many neglect pest prevention until it is too late. From rodents to insects, these tiny critters can make their way in, and wreak havoc on a home. Not only are they destructive, but they pose a major health issue if they get in contact with humans.

So, rather than wait for an infestation to happen…why not get ahead of the critters and stop them from getting in? That’s why we’ve listed five pest control tips to ensure your home stays pest-free!

1. Think Like One

It is important to do frequent walk-throughs of your home. While inspecting, try to find any holes or cracks, and seal them right away. Think about where these critters could be getting in from by getting down to their level while inspecting. Be sure to check the weather stripping on doors and windows, as these are easy entry points. Make sure to seal even the tiniest of holes you find. Even if it seems small, not only can it become larger, but you may be underestimating what some critters can squeeze through.

While inspecting, focus on your basement. More specifically, take a close look at where your pipes enter the home. These areas allow for the easiest access to the critters, and should be closely monitored for cracks or holes.

2. Use Sealed Containers

Ensure all leftovers are stored in lidded containers, and placed in cupboards that are high off the ground. Open food is an enticing smell for rodents and insects, so you’ll want to prevent them from being able to lust over it.

The harder the food is to get into, the better! These animals can carry numerous diseases with them. So, if you accidentally eat something an infected animal touched, it could result in a serious illness.

It is also important to wipe the jars of jams and peanut butter (where food can easily drip out). Even if it seems like a small amount, a drop is all it takes to have rodents coming back for more!

3. Stay Dry

Pests love a damp environment. Water spots or holes can be a breeding ground (and entry point) for unwanted insects such as cockroaches. To prevent this, inspect your taps for loose fittings, and have them repaired immediately. Furthermore, inspect and seal any cracks around tubs and sinks. This can easily prevent a small leak from turning into an insect breeding ground.

4. Be Sure to Lock up

Ensure that all the doors and windows are properly closed. It is especially important to lock up the garage, as it is the most exposed area of the house to the outdoors. If left open, you are giving animals an easy entry point…and there is no guarantee they’ll leave just as fast!

5. Tidy the Yard

Ensure the garden is free of dead leaves and shrubs. An unkept yard can easily become a cozy home for pests to live and breed in. While cleaning, it is also a good time to note any overlooked food sources. For example, spilled birdseed can host unwanted guests, and garbage that has blown in, may contain food remnants. If you notice this on your property, clean it immediately.

Further, although you may use the garage for extra storage, it is important not to keep any food in it. Regardless of how well you think the product is sealed, it is only a matter of time before a pest will break in to get it.
